What actually changes when you get circumcised? In this article we will take a closer look at the differences before and after a circumcision. circumcision. From penis appearance to sensitivity, hygiene, and daily comfort, what can you expect after the procedure? Whether you have a medical reason or a personal consideration, this article will help you get a clear picture of how circumcision will impact your body and your feelings.
What is Circumcision?
Circumcision is a medical procedure in which the foreskin of the penis – the piece of skin that covers the glans – is completely or partially removed. There are various reasons for having a circumcision performed. Think of medical complaints (too tight foreskin), religious beliefs or personal preference. The procedure can be performed at a young age, but adult men sometimes also consciously choose this. Although it is a relatively simple operation, many men wonder what the noticeable effects are on the appearance, feeling and daily comfort after circumcision.

The situation before circumcision
Before the procedure, the foreskin is still completely present and often covers the glans when at rest. In many men this functions without problems, but there are also situations in which the foreskin is too tight (phimosis), causes inflammation or is difficult to keep clean. This can lead to discomfort during erections, pain during sex or problems with hygiene. When men experience these complaints, circumcision is the solution to remedy the complaints.
The situation after circumcision
If circumcision is chosen, more than just the visible appearance of the penis will change. Because the foreskin is removed, this not only affects the appearance, but also the sensitivity of the glans, daily comfort and hygiene.
Appearance before and after circumcision
Before circumcision, the glans is (partly) covered by the foreskin. This gives the penis a more 'closed' and softer appearance. After the procedure, the glans is permanently visible, which changes the appearance of the penis. The skin around the glans is often slightly tighter and scars may be visible. The latter depends on the way in which the circumcision is performed. At Vatan Clinic, we often use the Genco clamp method where the scars are minimally visible.
Some men need some time to get used to the new look, while others experience it as an improvement and consciously choose it.
Sensitivity and sexual experience
A much-discussed topic about circumcision is the change in sensitivity of the glans after the procedure. Because the glans is almost always covered before the procedure, it remains relatively soft and sensitive. After circumcision, the glans is constantly in contact with clothing and friction, which can make it slightly less sensitive over time. This varies from man to man. Some men notice a big difference, other men little to no difference.
Hygiene and daily comfort
In terms of hygiene, circumcision offers many advantages for men. As we mentioned earlier, a lot of bacteria can accumulate under the foreskin. When the foreskin is removed after circumcision, bacteria or smegma can no longer accumulate under the foreskin and the glans remains clean. This makes the glans much more hygienic.
Some men also notice a difference in terms of comfort: less irritation when wearing tight clothing or during sports, and no more problems with a tight or painful foreskin. At the same time, it can take some getting used to at first that the glans is always in contact with fabric or movement, but that feeling decreases over time for most men.

A circumcision brings noticeable changes – both in appearance and in feeling, hygiene and daily comfort. Where one person experiences relief from physical complaints, another notices subtle differences in sensitivity or appearance. The impact of the procedure varies from person to person, but many men experience it as a positive step, especially when there were medical discomforts. By being well informed, you can make a conscious choice that suits your body and situation.
