Methods
Vatan Kliniek carries out circumcisions with the classic surgical method and with the modern clamp method. During the intake consultation we discuss which fits best.

Classic method
± 15 to 30 minutes
After local anaesthetic, the foreskin is cut and loosened all around. Finally, dissolvable stitches and/or tissue glue are applied. A dressing is often not needed.
Clamp method (Genco Clamp)
± 5 to 10 minutes
A certified clamp is placed around the foreskin and holds the wound edges closed. The foreskin is removed; stitches are unnecessary and there is an immediately closed wound edge.
The certified Genco Clamp
VATAN is the only clinic in the Netherlands that uses a certified (CE) circumcision clamp: the Genco Clamp®. The clamp method has been applied for decades and, according to comparative scientific research, has benefits in the area of complications and aesthetic result. For children younger than 3 years we almost always recommend the clamp method.
Similarities
- Both procedures take place under good local anaesthetic, with anaesthetic cream beforehand and (from 6 months) a calming light sedative.
- The preparation is the same in both cases.
Differences
- Duration: the clamp method is often finished within 5 to 10 minutes; the stitch/glue method takes 15 to 30 minutes.
- Follow-up check: not needed with either method. Stitches and tissue glue dissolve by themselves.
- Removing the clamp: for young children (< 3 months) the clamp usually falls off by itself within a week; for older children you simply remove it at home according to instructions.
