For the youngest children we carry out the circumcision virtually pain-free with the certified clamp method: safe, fast and with a short recovery time.

Why the clamp method for babies?
For babies and young children we almost always recommend the clamp method with the certified Genco Clamp. The wound edges are closed straight away, there is hardly any blood loss and stitches are not needed. With the clamp the procedure is usually finished within five to ten minutes; with the classic method it takes fifteen to thirty minutes. Both methods are safe and give a good result.
Your baby has to weigh at least 3 kg before we can treat him. If he weighs less, please contact us first; we will then discuss together what the best moment is.
How does the procedure work?
The circumcision takes place under local anaesthetic; your child can eat and drink as normal beforehand. Before the anaesthetic injection, your baby is given an anaesthetic cream (EMLA) and sucrose, sugar water with a proven pain-relieving effect in babies.
We only start the circumcision once nothing is felt any more. The doctor always first checks that the urinary opening sits properly inside the tube of the clamp; only then do we perform the circumcision. That way we know for certain that your baby can urinate normally afterwards.
To keep the treatment room calm, house rules apply: a maximum of four people may come along to the appointment and a maximum of two companions may enter the treatment room. Filming and photography are not allowed.
The first days at home
On the day of the circumcision, wash or shower your baby as usual before you come to the clinic. After the procedure that is no longer needed that day. At home you leave the area uncovered for half an hour to an hour to let it air, and you keep things quiet for the first few hours.
From the second day you rinse the penis at least twice a day with a shower head or in a warm bath, for at least ten minutes. Longer is fine too. The clamp is firmly attached and stays in place by itself; pulling on it is not possible.
Urinating simply happens through the tube of the clamp. Before the procedure the doctor checked that the urinary opening sits properly inside it. It may sting or spray a little the first few times; that is normal. If your child has not urinated after 24 hours, please let us know.

Frequently asked questions about a circumcision for a baby
The procedure takes place under local anaesthetic. Beforehand we apply an anaesthetic cream (EMLA), so that the anaesthetic injection is barely noticeable, and your baby is given sucrose: sugar water with a proven pain-relieving effect. We only start once nothing is felt any more.
In the first hours after the procedure babies often cry; that is common and can start after as little as twenty minutes. That is the first after-pain on day one.
