Circumcision before and after: what changes?

What actually changes when you have a circumcision? In this article we look more closely at the differences before and after a circumcision. From the appearance of the penis to sensitivity, hygiene and day to day comfort: what can you expect after the procedure? Whether you have a medical reason or a personal one, this article helps you form a clear picture of the impact of circumcision on your body and how you feel.

What is a circumcision?

Circumcision is a medical procedure in which the foreskin of the penis, the piece of skin that covers the glans, is removed completely or partly. There are various reasons for having a circumcision: medical complaints such as a foreskin that is too tight, religious conviction or personal preference. The procedure can take place at a young age, but adult men also sometimes choose it deliberately. Although it is a relatively straightforward operation, many men wonder what the noticeable effects are on appearance, sensation and daily comfort afterwards.

The situation before the circumcision

Before the procedure the foreskin is still fully present and often covers the glans when at rest. In many men this works without any problems, but there are also situations in which the foreskin is too tight (phimosis), causes inflammation or is difficult to keep clean. This can lead to discomfort during erections, pain during sex or problems with hygiene. When men start to suffer from these complaints, a circumcision is the solution that resolves them.

The situation after the circumcision

If you have chosen a circumcision, more often changes than just the visible appearance of the penis. Because the foreskin has been removed, this affects not only appearance but also the sensitivity of the glans, daily comfort and hygiene.

Appearance before and after circumcision

Before the circumcision the glans is partly or fully covered by the foreskin. This gives the penis a more closed and softer look. After the procedure the glans is permanently visible, which changes the appearance of the penis. The skin around the glans is often slightly tighter and scars may be visible. This last point depends on the way the circumcision is carried out. At Vatan Kliniek we use the Genco clamp method in many cases, which keeps scarring minimal.

Some men need a little time to get used to the new appearance, while others experience it as an improvement and choose it deliberately.

Sensitivity and sexual experience

A much discussed subject around circumcision is the change in sensitivity of the glans after the procedure. Because the glans is almost always covered before the procedure, it stays relatively soft and sensitive. After the circumcision the glans is in constant contact with clothing and friction, so over time it can become slightly less sensitive. This differs from man to man. Some men notice a big difference, others little or none at all.

Hygiene and daily comfort

In terms of hygiene, circumcision offers men considerable benefits. As we mentioned earlier, a lot of bacteria can build up under the foreskin. Once the foreskin has been removed, bacteria and smegma can no longer accumulate underneath it and the glans stays clean. This makes it considerably more hygienic.

In terms of comfort, some men also notice a difference: less irritation when wearing tight clothing or during sport, and no more trouble from a foreskin that is too tight or painful. At the same time it can take some getting used to at first that the glans is always in contact with fabric or movement, but for most men that feeling fades over time.

Conclusion

A circumcision brings noticeable changes, both in appearance and in sensation, hygiene and daily comfort. Where one man experiences relief from physical complaints, another notices subtle differences in sensitivity or appearance. The impact of the procedure differs from person to person, but many men experience it as a positive step, certainly where there were medical problems. By being well informed you can make a considered choice that suits your body and your situation.
