Sedation
At Vatan Kliniek, a circumcision can also take place under calming sleep sedation: a light, natural sleep for both children and adults. We are the only clinic in the Netherlands that offers circumcision under sleep sedation. In addition to the local anaesthetic that is always present, this provides extra calm and comfort.
Sleep sedation is not general anaesthesia
Sleep sedation is something different from general anaesthesia (full anaesthesia). With general anaesthesia you are put completely under, usually via a mask or a breathing tube, and an anaesthetist temporarily takes over your breathing. That is a more major procedure with a longer recovery time.
With sleep sedation you only receive a calming agent via a nasal spray, which brings you into a light, natural sleep. You keep breathing on your own, are continuously monitored and are quickly awake and clear-headed afterwards. In this way we combine maximum calm with minimal strain, for both children and adults.
How does sleep sedation work?
The sleep sedation agent is administered via a nasal spray. Within 30 to 90 minutes a natural sleep sets in. Because of its selective action, it is a safe agent for short procedures.
During the sleep, monitoring takes place: the oxygen level, the breathing and the heart rate are continuously monitored and medical staff are always present; for children this is a paediatrician. Local anaesthetic is also always given. We only begin the circumcision once the patient is in deep sleep, without pain.
Preparation and conditions
Patients who undergo sedation may only have clear fluids in the 2 hours beforehand; up to 2 hours before the procedure a light meal is allowed. Make sure the patient has emptied their bladder well beforehand.
When is sleep sedation not possible?
- Age younger than 12 months
- Serious heart or lung diseases and congenital heart defects
- Heart rhythm problems or known low blood pressure
- Acute brain disorders or recent head trauma
After the procedure, the patient may go home asleep (no public transport) and it is advised not to leave the patient alone for the first 8 hours.

The extra costs for sleep sedation amount to €250 (only possible on certain dates).
