Why a circumcision?
Circumcision has been practised in various cultures since ancient times. People choose a circumcision for medical, religious, aesthetic or sexual reasons.
Medical reasons
A circumcision is the standard procedure for various foreskin complaints:
- Phimosis: a narrowing of the foreskin, so that it can no longer be pulled back over the glans. Congenital or the result of repeated inflammations.
- Paraphimosis: the retracted foreskin can no longer be pulled back over the glans. Usually arises due to inflammations.
- Balanitis: recurring inflammations of the glans and the foreskin.
For some complaints, the doctor can also perform a preputioplasty, in which the foreskin is widened.
Religious-cultural and hygienic reasons
Muslims and Jews in particular have their sons circumcised out of religious conviction or cultural tradition. In addition, a circumcised penis produces hardly any or no smegma and is therefore easier to keep clean: a hygienic and medical-preventive benefit.
Aesthetic and sexual reasons
Some men (and partners) find a circumcised penis more attractive or more pleasant. Hygiene and sexual experience also play a role:
- A less sensitive glans can help with premature ejaculation and a longer sexual experience.
- A foreskin that is too long can mean that the glans is stimulated too little.
Whatever the reason: there is sufficient scientific research that demonstrates medical and preventive benefits.
Scientific evidence
Various authoritative health organisations have researched the medical and preventive benefits of circumcision:
- World Health Organization (WHO): medical circumcision lowers the risk of heterosexually transmitted HIV in men by about 60%, based on randomised research. who.int
- American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP, 2012): the health benefits outweigh the risks, including fewer urinary tract infections, less penile cancer and less transmission of certain STIs. publications.aap.org
- Cochrane review (Siegfried et al.): randomised research shows strong evidence that circumcision reduces HIV transmission via heterosexual contact, with a very low complication risk. cochranelibrary.com
